Smoke Detector Installation

Hard-wired smoke detectors
Hard-wired smoke detectors connect directly to your electrical system. They include back-up batteries as an additional precaution, but are powered by the main electrical circuit — so even if you forget to replace the batteries, the alarm keeps working. Some states now require hard-wired detectors in new home builds, and your Gray Electric electrician can tell you whether your home already uses this type of system.
Interconnected smoke detectors
Interconnected detectors communicate with one another: when one alarm senses smoke or fire, every alarm activates — alerting everyone in the home and identifying exactly where the smoke is detected. They can be interconnected wirelessly or by hardwire.
Both the NFPA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission recognize that interconnected detectors tend to be safer overall, thanks to their ability to quickly alert every occupant. That can be critical in larger or multi-level homes. Whichever system you choose, installation should be completed by a qualified electrician in accordance with state and local regulations.
